California HVAC cost guide

How much does AC replacement cost in California?

Start with published market context. Then force every proposal to show what is actually included. A big number without scope is not a comparison.

The published price context—not a local verdict

Angi's 2026 national guide puts total AC replacement costs from $1,400 to $12,500, with a reported average of $5,978. It also lists central AC equipment around $2,500 to $4,500 and installation around $3,500 to $7,000. Those are published national figures—not QuoteCheck data and not a promise for a Central Valley home.

California proposals can move well outside a broad online range. The right comparison is between like-for-like scopes: capacity, efficiency, equipment match, ductwork, electrical work, permits, and commissioning. If one quote simply says “new 4-ton system,” you do not yet know enough to compare it.

What makes a Central Valley AC quote move

  • Cooling load: square footage matters, but windows, shade, insulation, ceiling height, occupancy, and air leakage matter too. Ask for the load calculation behind the size recommendation.
  • Efficiency and configuration: newer equipment is rated with SEER2 and EER2. More efficient or variable-capacity equipment can raise the installed price.
  • Ductwork: repairs, replacement, resizing, sealing, or adding returns can change the job more than the outdoor unit itself.
  • Electrical and refrigerant work: a new disconnect, panel work, line-set replacement, condensate routing, or pad changes should be written into the scope.
  • Permits and startup: confirm who pulls the permit, schedules inspection, registers the warranty, and documents final commissioning.

Do not compare totals. Compare this scope.

Ask each contractor for the exact outdoor model, indoor coil or air-handler model, capacity, efficiency rating, thermostat, labor warranty, and exclusions. A matched system matters: a familiar brand name on the condenser alone is not the full system specification.

Get multiple written quotes when the replacement is not an emergency. One contractor may be including duct corrections or electrical upgrades that another has left out. The cheapest number can become the most expensive job if the missing work shows up after the equipment is delivered.
